Temi & Yele’s Traditional Wedding

Temi & Yele’s traditional wedding reception was our first event of the year, considering that last year (2020) was a tumultuous and stifling one. First, was the turmoil of the lock-down. Next, came the Corona virus induced hardship on regular Nigerians by our ruling elite. And lastly, was of course the EndSars situation. The event took place at the Lagos Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja.

Christian Music

An intermediary connected Yele and Band EnRoute. Though we didn’t get to meet until D-day, we communicated via chats and calls. He didn’t want a band that would just play music, he was specific about the kind of music he wanted, and when. The couple were Christians, pastors children to be specific. So, the music at this traditional wedding reception had to be Gospel, Motivational songs and Old School, no vulgarity whatsoever. Guess what? We delivered. And that, is how we roll.

A Private Joke

I am going to remember Temi & Yele’s wedding reception for a long time and here is why.

We had played our customized mix for the segmented entrance of the guests. People had danced until their feet began to groan. Correction, i meant to say ‘throb’ because feet do not groan. We’d all had our fill of the finger-licking delicacies, provided by the ‘olowo sibi’.The term ‘olowo sibi’ is Yoruba and its direct translation means ‘one who has hands of spoon‘, i think… am not Yoruba. Its usually used to depict a talented cook.

The cake had been cut and it was time for the bride to feed the groom. As the bride was chopping a sizable chunk of cake into smaller bits. The Emcee asked ‘…what are you making for your husband?‘ and the bride sweetly and simply said “Cake”. That’s my private joke.

No One Says Cake

At a Nigerian wedding or traditional marriage reception, when the bride feeds the groom some cake, its a symbolism. Its meant to show how she would take care of him in their marriage, going forward.

Usually when the Emcee asks that question, the bride would say she was making something else. Presumably the groom’s favorite meal, because it’s a make-believe sort of thing. Sometimes, the Emcee doesnt ask a question, he’d just announce that the bride was making so-and-so meal for the husband.

In over a decade of being in this business, no bride had ever said she was making ‘CAKE’. The simplicity of that single word endeared me to this couple even more. may they grow old together.
