Oluyomi Afolabi’s 60th Birthday almost didn’t happen. Don’t get me wrong, she did clock 60, it was the party that almost didn’t happen. She is such a shy and private person that until the last moment, she was still skeptical about having it. One of her besties actually said “wo, if you don’t want a party, we want a party. You go ahead and put things together and we will go eat, dance and party on your behalf”.

Eventually, after I assured her that BandEnRoute is versatile beyond comprehension, she gave the go-ahead for things to roll. She is so passionate and particular about Nigerian folk songs, that she had to be sure of the repertoire.

An Unusual Twist

When it was time for the celebrant to say a few words, her words brought me close to tears. First, the soft-spoken mother of two has had such a health-challenged life that her life is a wonder. Her health, her life and her accomplishments can only be attributed to God’s love. Next, she called out four people; her house keeper, driver, gardener and laundry man. For her 60th birthday Mrs Oluyomi Afolabi and family did something I’d never seen done before. She gave these four exceptional individuals, awards and gifts for twenty years of dedicated service. 

This event would have been incomplete if the compere had been anyone other than Yemisi Peters (ACIPM). She is a multi-talented and multi-faceted Appoemn colleague who is also the CEO of SparklingWorld Business & Events.
